Making a Avatar/Icon is simple on Photoshop, of course if you are new to the program you may get a bit confused which is the reason I am writting this.

The First step in this would be to open a new canvas. There are multipul options as to the settings, you can have transparent canvas or color background which you choose, and for an avatar either the deminsions 60x60, 80x80, 70x70, 100x100.

Follow this path:
File -> New
You should get a window to pop up which looks like this:



Next we need to add the image. For this you either have the picture saved on the pc or you have one you copied. I'm going to use one I have saved on the pc. I'll use a PNG from Aethereality.net and resize it. First i open the document:

File -> Open

I locate the file and now select the part of the picture that I want. To select the image we use the marquee tool at the top left, it looks like this:

To select whole image hit ctrl+alt+A



Next I copy and paste the image into the 100x100 canvas I created and close out of the other document.

Did some of your image disapear? Click the Move Tool If the image is bigger then the canvas size it should look something like this:



Shrink it to the size you want. To keep it undistorted hold down the Shift key and shrink it. Next we should create a background. This can be done with brushes and filters or whatever else you want.

Our image though is only on one layer, create a new layer and drag it (click and hold down mouse over the layer and drag below first layer) You should lable this layer background.



You want to create the background on the layer named background. Once you are done, then go to file-> Save for web.
