Patterns are simple. They can be anything you want just as a paint brush, only thing to keep in mind is it has to repeat. I will show you how to make a simple pattern. First we need to open a new canvus, here are the settings I have:



Next we need to selected the pencil tool, hold down on the Paint brush tool and select pencil on the bottom.



Draw what kind of pattern you want, I'm going to make an dashed line. This is what it looks like magnified:



Next go to edit->Define pattern. You should get a window that comes up that looks like this:



Our pattern though will not be saved anymore after we change pattern sets, therefore we need to save it in its own set. Go to the paint bucket tool and at the top in the drop down menu Pattern.



Now open the preset manager:



Select the patterns you want in the set and name the set whatever you want. Now you can use the patterns any time you want.



My finished product:







The Pattern layer has a layer effect called color overlay and the color I choose for the over lay was White. Its fill is also only 71%, and the layer is on Overlay instead of normal, the image is one I extracted from the Aethereality gallary.
